Assignment 8: Contoured Artifact
Objective: Create a contoured artifact with the intention of laser cutting each piece to assemble physically.
Thoughts on how to accomplish this:
- Pick or design a 3d object that you would like to laser cut using the contour method.
- Pay attention to overall scale of your object. Assembled model dimensions should be no larger than 12 in x 12 in x 12 in.
- Utilize the
Contour
command in Rhino to create contours. - Use the
ExtrudeCrv
command to create extruded layers for visualizing. - Create visualizations (renders) of the intended objects using extruded layers. Explore different Rhino render modes to give your objects a "look and feel".
- Save renders out of rhino using the
ScreenCaptureToFile
command. - Prepare a file for laser cutting at Idea Forge.
- Laser bed size: 32 in x 20 in (Plan to cut material that fits within this area)
- Supported file type: DXF

Deliverable:
- A Rhino design file containing your contoured object(s). Drop .3dm design file into Slack when you share your post.
- In a blog post, describe the project goals, design process, challenges, and outcomes. Be sure to embed and include any supporting media and references to resources used.
- Utilize any media necessary to explain your ideas. For example, diagrams, screenshots, screencaptures, renders, images, animation, and video.
- Export one or more mesh files (STL) of your contoured objects and upload to Sketchfab (You will need to make an account if you havent already). Once uploaded to Sketchfab, embed a Sketchfab viewer into your blog post. Here's a tutorial about how to do this.
